預計在今年 10 月上市的微軟 Windows 8 系統，雖然同時具備傳統桌面使用介面，以及針對觸控裝置設計的 Metro UI 介面，但這並不會代表 Windows 8 上市時會有讓你眼花撩亂的多種購買版本選擇。根據 Windows Team Blog 所公佈的最新訊息，Windows 8 將會只有 Windows 8、Windows 8 Pro 以及 Windows 8 RT 三種版本而已。更精確的來說，對於使用筆電或桌機的消費者來說，Windows 8 其實只有兩個本選擇，因為 Windows 8 RT 是 ARM 處理器架構裝置的專用版本。
而 Windows 8、Windows 8 Pro 以及 Windows 8 RT 這三種版本當中，前面兩個在主要功能部分幾乎相同，而且都能從 Windows 7 Starter、Home Basic、Home Premium 等版本直接升級，只不過 Windows 8 Pro 針對企業用戶多出了虛擬化、遠端桌面、網域、安全性等方面的進階選項。至於設計給 ARM 裝置使用的 Window 8 RT，雖然內建了針對觸控操作優化的 Office 軟體，但不能安裝 x86 與 x64 架構的軟體，同時也沒有內建 Windows Media Player。
